Progress Presentation 04

Progress Presentation 04

Feedback On Presentation

  • I have come on a lot since last time
  • Work is looking good
  • It is fundamentally Production Design that I am looking at - quick look at that maybe
  • Look at how I am going to build up events etc - like a graph, agency should be going up and down
  • Fellow student recommended looking at Tanya Krzywinska

Personal Notes

This was another really good presentation. It was said that they see great improvements in my presentations and my work so I am pleased with that. There was not really any concerns they had regarding my project so I find that comforting too.

Where To Go From Here

On the feedback I got it's clear I just have to keep going at the pace I'm going and keep my targets in mind. Still looking to have this finished by March so April can be used for testing and polishing.

Progress Presentation 3

Progress Presentation 3

Feedback on Project

  • Look at Tzvetan Todorov - theorist, in relation to telling murder/mystery plots
  • Keep looking at references and examples - games, films etc
  • Too much focus on level design - since project is about environmental storytelling
  • Look at what each asset/objects significance is to the story and how it is told
  • For hotel level - what is the purpose of the empty rooms?

Personal Notes

This was a very useful feedback session for me. They were pleased at the amount I had done since last time and was interested in my story and how I came about it. The main concerns highlighted was my scope might be too big and I was focusing too much on level design. I need to bring my focus back to environmental storytelling and understand the significance of each object/asset I create for the level. It was suggested that if I was having empty rooms that can be explored in the hotel level that there should be more significance to them and how they convey some sort of story.

Where To Go From Here
  • Finish hotel hallway - leave the rooms for now and start planning out the main story level - Asylum.
  • Figure out how to give the premise of who you are at the beginning of the level and why you are there etc
  • Look into Tzvetan Todorov in order for planning events in the asylum that are communicating the story.

Week 12 - Progress Presentation 2

So today was our second progress presentation. Due to coursework deadlines, I did not put as much effort into this as possible but it still went well. Some of the feedback I received from my lecturers could have been avoided if I did put a little bit more effort in but apart from that, I was generally pleased and came away with a lot of valuable feedback. Here is my presentation:

Progress Presentation 2

Feedback On Project

  • Good to see I had a clear aim and objectives
  • Look at lighting in UDK as it's different to Maya
  • With case studies, pay attention to things that do not work in order to better my own project
  • Have a method for carrying out a case study (FRAMEWORK)
  • Look at how I'm going to tell/convey a story - using techniques I have learnt
  • Look at how I apply knowledge to my practical work
  • Look at comparison (e.g compare hallways in different games)
  • Look into completing an 'active' case study

Feedback On Presentation

  • Approach as if it is a completely new audience
  • Re-summerise last presentation
Looking over these remarks I can easily apply myself too them. The presentation feedback points are an easy fix - just spend more time preparing the presentation. As for the feeback on my project, there is a lot too look at here which is a great help for my future plans. I was saving UDK work for next semester but as highlighted - it might be best to at least work on one asset and light it in UDK now.

As for conveying the story, I am currently in the process of learning techniques and applying them to a test environment so hopefully I can show a successful outcome with these.

A lot of attention was drawn to the methodology of my case studies. It is clear I need to write out and apply a method/framework I can use whilst playing the games and writing about them. By doing this I can effectively crituque them and apply the knowledge to my project.

Comparing scenes in other games is also a really useful idea. I will start looking into games I can compare and conduct a good amount of research this way.

Overall I am pleased with my feedback. I currently am working on work for hand-ins in two weeks but I am hoping I can add in a little more that planned using the feedback given today.

Week 5 - Presentation Review

So today we had our first progress presentation. After recent events I was unsure how I would do however I found that I sailed through it very well and with good confidence. I was really pleased at this and because of that, I am even more confident and excited about my idea.

Basically I began introducing what my project aim was and what I want to focus on in this project. I mentioned the rough idea I currently have (very basic as I changed it the other day) and then began to discuss the research I had carried out so far. I discussed basic internet reading, games played/looked into and books read. After that I stated what practical pieces I have done (I admit it's not much at the moment) and finished with what I intended to look at in the near future.

I got some great positive feedback from my lecturers. A brief mention that they got the impression that my question was, 'how to guide a user through an environment'. I myself knew it was something liek this but was thrilled to see they interpreted it this way and were happy with it. Another really insightful idea mentioned (which admittingly I had though of before but never really had a chance to pursue) was to base my idea on a true environment. So find an actual hotel that used to be an asylum and use that to inspire my story and design. Having this 'true story' effect would really enhance my final piece and would entail more interest among people. Also suggested was for me to try incorporate more of a reason for my choice in environment. This, I can easily do.

I really found this a helpful experience. It has helped raise my confidence and guide me towards the right path. I have set myself a few tasks to carry out over the weekend in order to catch up on myself. Nothing to drastic just odds and ends. I want too:

  • Blog a history of my 3D environments - explaining my progression and improvement and how I got too where I am today
  • Find a true example of my idea - Find (ideally) and example in the UK, USA & Europe and compare
  • Moodboards - In order for a more visual approach I'd like to come up with a few moodboards
  • Finish book - I would also like to finish the book I'm reading; 'What Video Games Have To Teach Us About Learning And Literacy' and blog an in-depth review on it

Week 4 - Presentation Preperation

Just as a heads up - the picture above has nothing to do with this blog post or even anything in particular. I just felt like I should put up a picture with some of these posts. This one is one I took whilst on holiday in Spain...

...Anyway, this week, we discussed our progress presentations that are happening next week. We discussed what needed to be said and showed and in small groups, we quickly prepared a short version of our presentation in order for some initial feedback that we can perhaps sort out in time for the actual presentation.

There was four of us including me in our group. It was useful hearing everyone's topics and how they had gone about it. Giving feedback to them and hearing what others said really helped in shaping up my own ideas.

I got a lot of very useful and very interesting feedback and pointers. This exercise has proved more useful than I would of realised. I summed up what I was looking to do which was something along the lines of:

To create a 3D environment showcasing the historic transformation of Mental Institutes and to showcase this through the eyes of someone with a mental illness to help raise awareness and empathy for those who suffer from a mental illness.

I want to create a believable atmosphere with a high quality environment focusing on textures and lighting. I also want to portray an accurate representation and knowledge of Asylums and mental health issues and show how they have changed over time.

As well as saying all this I went on to explain the research I have carried out and my idea a little further. The feedback I received was very good and emphasis that  I still need to narrow down and cement my idea.

One point was raised about whether or not I was actually making this into a game or not. The reason being because I kept calling it a game although I don't actually want it to be - I just couldn't think up another phrase to explain it. Someone in the group suggested 'Interactive Experience' which sounds much more accurate.

It was also mentioned that if this was the case, I need to make it somewhat interesting in order to entice the user to interact through the whole experience and not get bored. This is something I feel narrative can hopefully solve in order to keep up an interesting flow.

They asked me to give examples of mental illness' I was looking to showcase - I mentioned Depression, Schizophrenia and Multiple Personality Disorder. They raised an extremely good point that did not even cross my mind - depression as a mental illness is highly unlikely to be a reason for being in an institute. This was an excellent critique which I will have to sort and decide what too do with.

A huge aspect of my project that was raised is that it is an extremely delicate area and I need to be careful when attempting to replicate these places and illness'. I am aware of this and will be doing my best to accurately portray the asylum and mental health illness'.

Here is what my group wrote as Strengths:

If done well, could bring a lot of new ground to representation of mental illness or treatment of, in games.
Project has a lot of room to evolve into a number of interesting avenues.

Here is what my group wrote as weaknesses:

Research has to be very accurate. Slight Misrepresentation could ruin validity on project.
Easy to use too grand a scale. Aim for a great representation of only a few elements.

All this feedback has already opened my eyes to different ideas and ways of going about my project. I was also given some research suggestions that may help in my progress of things. These were to check out the new Silent Hill Playable Trailer and to look at Brood Hollow - some sort of comic that involves portraying the effects of O.C.D. I find myself becoming even more interested in my project and cannot wait to progress further. Fourth year is beginning to shape up much better than I had imagined so I'm pleased with that.
